In celebration of the 80th year anniversary of the Hammond Civic Center in 2017, Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. has authorized renovations to the iconic building. Remodel work has already begun on the two concession stands inside the arena. Other improvements coming soon to the building at 5825 Sohl Ave. include new gymnasium bleachers, new scoreboards, gym floor refinishing, new basketball and volleyball court systems, electrical upgrades, hallway painting and a new portable stage. These improvements are necessary to keep the historic Civic Center vibrant as a community gathering destination. Improvements such as these will continue to give the facility flexibility to hold exciting events in Hammond such as ‘219 Day’, basketball tournaments, professional wrestling, mixed martial arts, Cinco de Mayo, circuses, graduations, concerts and many others.

“These new renovations to this historic building will only enhance its beauty, make it more functional and up-to-date” said Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. “These improvements will allow us to handle larger crowds in the Civic Center more comfortably with smaller lines for the concession stands.”
