Hammond Residents Invited to TOD Workshop

CATEGORY: Engineering, News

The City of Hammond invites residents and interested persons to the second community workshop taking place on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Kenwood School, 6416 Hohman Avenue, Hammond, IN 46324, regarding proposed station area plans in the West Lake Extension of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD). The meeting will be facilitated by Farr Associates, a nationally-renowned planning and architecture firm based in Chicago.  The workshop will cover proposed transit-oriented-development surrounding the two new train stations in Hammond.  The workshop will NOT include discussions surrounding the West Lake Extension, track alignment and design or results of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement that is currently out for public comment.

NICTD and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) recently won a competitive grant to study station area design associated with the West Lake Extension of NICTD commuter rail service. A big part of this planning process is community engagement. Residents and interested persons are invited to attend this public meeting.

  • Participants will be asked their opinions on a series of proposed schemes for each station area. Only two station areas will be covered per meeting (i.e. Munster Ridge and Munster/Dyer Main St on 2/14; Hammond Gateway and South Hammond on 2/16).
  • The consultant will provide a brief presentation that covers the proposed schemes for two station areas, provide highlights from the recent TOD Market Study, and guide residents through a feedback process on the proposed schemes.

Community involvement is a significant factor in the outcome of the station area designs. This workshop is not a typical “stand and deliver” presentation.  Public participation is encouraged. Thank you and we hope to see you there!
