Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. has announced that due to the extreme heat expected this week, the City of Hammond has identified buildings as cooling centers, including: The Jean Shepherd Center and the Lost Marsh Golf Course Clubhouse.
Individuals may use these facilities during regular operating hours if necessary to cool down from temperatures that are predicted to remain high through the week. Also, the splash pads at Hessville and Martin Luther King Parks is a great way to cool off and is free to the public.
“Please check in on your neighbors, especially senior citizens who are most vulnerable by the extreme heat,” stated Mayor McDermott. “It is important to stay hydrated and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. If we experience a power outage and it becomes necessary, we will open the Jean Shepherd Center and Lost Marsh Clubhouse overnight.”
