The Flag of the City of Hammond, Indiana

The official flag for the City of Hammond was adopted by the Hammond Common Council in 1971.

  • The star at the top of the flag acknowledges those who served in our nations military.
  • The border around the star is for all those who were wounded or disabled in military service.
  • The Calumet Peace Pipe under the star represents a “Land of Peace Pipe”.
  • The Indian head represents the first explorer of Hammond, arriving on March 31, 1675. The Indian possessed the peace pipe, which saved his life.
  • The Grand Calumet and the Little Calumet Rivers are recognized as the two rivers that touch Hammond.
  • On the right is the French Explorer, Marquette, who explored these rivers for Congress.
