All applicants must meet the basic requirements of the Hammond Police Department and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years of age or attain such age by the date of hire and not older than 39 years of age by the date of hire.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire.
- Applicants must never have been convicted of a felony or domestic battery.
- An applicant who has engaged in criminal activity may be rejected by the hammond police department regardless of whether the applicant has ever been prosecuted, convicted, or acquitted
- Applicants must be of good moral character.
- Applicants must be high school graduates or possess a GED Equivalent.
- Applicants must pass all testing established by the Hammond Police Department.
- Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Applicants must submit to voice stress analysis test(s).
- Once applicants have completed all non-medical testing and background investigations, applicants will receive an application for membership in the 1977 Police Officers' and Firefighters' Pension and Disability Fund, which contains a conditional offer of employment and a statement of understanding. The offer of employment is conditioned on the applicant successfully passing the statewide baseline medical examination and the statewide mental examination.
- Applicants must possess the strength and agility necessary to perform routine law enforcement duties.
- Applicants must submit to fingerprinting and have a photograph taken by the police department.
- Applicants cannot have been dishonorably discharged from military service. A discharge other than honorable may be grounds for rejection.
- Applicants must submit to a battery of psychological examinations and an interview with a clinical psychologist.
