The Board of Public Works is the executive branch responsible for the public safety and control of the public rights-of-way. This includes digging requests, cable, street and alley closures, street solicitations, and requests for street signs. It has the exclusive control over all matters and property dealing with the police and fire departments. It is the contracting arm of the executive branch includes all purchasing for the public works, all street projects, gasoline and vehicles. The Board also serves as an appeal panel for building code violations denial, suspension or revocation of business licenses and dangerous dog designations done by Animal Control. The Board of Works also serves as an appeal board for the appeal of late rental registration applications, grants garage sale/yard sale permits, provides Notice of Claim and Freedom of Information forms.

The Board of Public Works & Safety approves all Garage Sale Permits in the city.

Garage Sale Permits can be emailed to law@gohammond.com or dropped off at the Law Department. Permits are approved at the Board of Public Works and Safety meeting on Thursday mornings. Permits must be submitted by Wednesday to be approved for Thursday. You will receive the approved copy via email. The City does not charge a fee.
