Principal Function

The Janitor is responsible for performing cleaning tasks and general maintenance tasks in the Police Department, and within the City of Hammond, and all other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Cleans offices, lobbies, hallways, stairwells, breakrooms, kitchens, gym, restrooms, jail cells, jail shower area, ammunition room, and all other areas by completing the following tasks:
    • Empties trash, paper, and recycling receptacles/containers/cans, and cleans the inside of each, as needed.
    • Vacuums carpets and sweeps and mops floors.
    • Dusts all furniture, light fixtures, walls, baseboards, and equipment.
    • Cleans and disinfects countertops, toilets, sinks, light switch plates, handrails, and other surfaces, as needed.
    • Cleans and washes walls and baseboards, as needed.
    • Cleans windows, doors, mirrors, and other glass.
    • Polishes brass, as needed.
    • Fills soap dispensers, toilet paper holders, paper towel dispensers, and refills other related supplies, as needed.
    • Deep cleans throughout the building, as needed.
  2. Empties all outdoor trash receptacles, as needed.
  3. Documents all cleaning and maintenance activities as they are completed.
  4. Completes heavy cleaning tasks, e.g., ovens, ceiling vents, etc., as needed.
  5. Stocks and maintains all cleaning supplies, and other supplies needed, e.g., toilet paper, paper towels, soap, trash bags, etc., as needed.
  6. Assists the Police Department with any other cleaning-related projects, or in the setting up for events, meetings, etc., as needed.
  7. Notifies the Senior Records Clerk when areas are in need of repair and performs light maintenance tasks, as appropriate.
  8. Communicates with and between all city offices/departments, and the Senior Records Clerk, as needed.
  9. Attends all meetings, conferences, training sessions, etc., as required by the City of Hammond and the department.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required; and one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is desired. Previous janitorial and light maintenance experience in a municipality or government-related job is desired.

Other Skills and Abilities

The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • The knowledge of basic mathematical skills is required.
  • A basic understanding and knowledge of general building cleaning and light maintenance is required.
  • The ability to use simple hand and power tools to include: broom, mop, buffer, duster, fan cleaner, and vacuum cleaner to effectively complete assigned tasks is required.
  • A basic knowledge of cleaning products, lubricants, and chemical additives as they relate to building cleaning and maintenance is required.
  • A basic knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) rules and regulations with regards to material safety data sheets (MSDSs), bloodborne safety, lock-out tag-out, proper lifting, the proper use of tools and machinery, etc. and the safety of employees in the department is required.
  • A basic understanding and knowledge of purchasing processes and procedures is required.
  • A basic knowledge of all municipal operations within the City of Hammond is required.
  • A working knowledge of Police Department policies, procedures, standards, internal controls, and work methods is required.
  • The ability to maintain and cultivate positive relationships with the public, vendors and other City of Hammond departments is required.
  • The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.
  • The ability to access and determine a problem and come up with a sound rational conclusion or solution in a cleaning or light maintenance environment is required.
  • The ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment while providing exceptional customer service is required.
  • The ability to recognize confidential information and to keep that information confidential as required by state statutes and internal office processes, procedures, and guidelines is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, to extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather), and the risk of electrical shock and vibration when working near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required on a job site may include: safety harness, ear protection, gloves, rubber steel-toed boots, safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection, hard hat, hair covering, protective coat, safety vest, and various respirators to include: dust mask, chemical cartridge, and/or supplied air, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The department will provide all PPE as required by the job.

The Police Department is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and this job may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends and on holidays, as needed. The employee may be required to drive City of Hammond vehicles or their own vehicle to meetings and events. Thus, a valid driver’s license may be required and the employee must be able to be insured by the city

Hiring will be done in accordance with Hammond City Ordinance #8620 as it pertains to the residency requirement.
Position will be posted internally only from September 13, 2024, until September 19, 2024. If the position is not filled internally it will be held open for external applications an additional ten (10) days. The position will remain posted until filled or no more than 10 days.
