Join the Student Conservation Association (SCA) Calumet Tree Conservation Corps this fall as they plant hundreds of trees in local parks and schools!
The Calumet Tree Conservation Corps is an SCA team of five young adults from the Calumet Region. The team is working to plant and maintain hundreds of native Indiana trees in East Chicago, Gary, Hammond, and Whiting. The SCA tree planting program is a member of Northwest Indiana’s CommuniTree program. Urban trees provide many benefits to our communities, such as neighborhood beautification, flood prevention, energy savings, air purification, wildlife habitat, and much more.
Daiva Gylys, SCA Chicago Program Manager, encourages residents to lend a hand at community planting dates scheduled for every Saturday in September, October, and November. Gylys notes “The Calumet Tree Conservation Corps is working hard to green up communities in Northwest Indiana. We really rely on volunteers to come out and help plant in their communities. It’s incredible what we can accomplish together.” At each planting event, the SCA demonstrates proper tree planting techniques. Volunteers then help to plant, mulch and water trees. All tools are provided, and plantings will take place rain or shine. Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
